History of Intelligence Bureau (IB)

Actually, Intelligence Bureau from the day on is the part of British Intelligence Bureau which was established by Charles MacGregor – Major General of British Army.

On that occasion in 1885, Charles MacGregor was the quartermaster General and head of the intelligence department at Shimla.

After the independence of Pakistan, all Armed Forces including IB was portioned. And Pakistan Intelligence bureau was established in Karachi.

That’s why IB is the oldest secret intelligence service, other being the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) of the Pakistan Army.

In the beginning, the IB is the only main intelligence agency of Pakistan with the responsibility of countering domestic surveillance and foreign affairs.

In 1947, disappointing detailing and bad performance of Military Intelligence (MI) was not admirable. Because of this, IB was anxious about internal security affairs and unable to build the foreign intelligence collection.

The analysis led to the establishment of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in 1948 that instantly took responsibility for the collection of strategic and foreign intelligence at all levels of command.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan makes appointments for IB but the has to be confirmed by the President.
